Recipe: Grinch Kabobs for Kids
Looking for a healthy treat for Christmas time instead of the usual cookies and other sweets? Here’s an adorable idea using fruit to make Grinch kabobs!
What You’ll Need:
- Toothpicks
- Green grapes
- Sliced bananas
- Sliced strawberry ends (to look like Santa’s hat)
- Mini marshmallows
Directions:
- Stack toothpicks starting with a green grape (stem side through the toothpick), then a slice of a banana, the slice of a strawberry (pointy end last), then a mini marshmallow (looks like the puffy end of Santa’s hat).
- Eat fairly soon after or the bananas will go bad quickly!
Homemade Candy Cane Sugar Scrub
If you’re looking to make easy and inexpensive gifts for your loved ones this year, this Peppermint Candy Cane Sugar Scrub “recipe” is perfect. It smells so good and it is a lot like the expensive department store brands.
What You’ll Need:
- 2 cups of granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup almond or coconut oil
- Peppermint essential oil
- Raspberry juice or red food coloring
- Jar or container to hold it
- 2 bowls
- A piece of printer paper
Directions:
- Slowly pour the almond or coconut oil into the sugar until the consistency is soft and not too oily. It may take less than the amount of you have set aside, to watch for consistency.
- Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the mixture and stir together.
- Separate the mixture into 2 bowls of equal amounts.
- Add the food coloring or juice to 1 of the bowls of mixture.
- Roll the printing paper into a funnel (a regular funnel is too small for the mixture to flow through) and pour the colored mixture. Press down with spoon.
- Repeat with white, then colored, etc. until it is used up and creates a candy cane effect.
- Put on the cap and decorate with a bow!
- Go here for the label if you’d like to use it for your bottle or jar.
Thank you SO MUCH to The Idea Room for this tutorial. SUCH a great and healthy idea.
Recipe: Crustless Pumpkin Pie (Gluten & Dairy Free!)
Holidays can be hard for those with food sensitivities, but luckily there are recipes out there that help with foods that people can actually eat! This pumpkin pie recipe is gluten-free and can be dairy-free (the directions include the option). Enjoy!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups pure pumpkin puree
- 1 370mL can evaporated skim milk (optional: substitute coconut milk for dairy-free)
- 3/4 cup liquid egg substitute (or 3 egg whites)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1.5 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ginger
- 0.5 tsp nutmeg
- 1.5 tsp vanilla extract
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 9″ pie pan
- Large bowl
- Hand mixer
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Lightly grease a 9″ pie pan
Combine all ingredients in bowl. Beat with hand mixer until smooth.
Pour into the 9″ sprayed pie pan and bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.
Reduce heat to 325 degrees. Continue to bake pie for 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean.
DIY: Handmade Turkey Hair Bows
I don’t know about you, but I know I’ve spent $10 or more for Thanksgiving turkey bows. I found a really simple tutorial so that you don’t have to pay more than a buck or two for them. You could even make them as gifts or sell them if you’d like!
What You’ll Need:
- Glue gun
- Scissors
- Brown 5/8 ribbon ( patterned or plain)
- Yellow 5/8 ribbon
- Orange 5/8 ribbon
- Wiggly Eyes
- Headband or hair clip
- Optional: thin wire
Directions:
- Cut strip of brown ribbon about 2″ long, fold in half and glue the two ends together on the inside part (the part not showing) and press. Set it aside.
- Cut 3 more brown ribbons: 4″, 4.5″, and 5″. Put glue on the end of each ribbon on the side you want showing to create a curve like an oval or O, press and set aside all 3.
- Grab the first 2″ ribbon you folded inside the smallest loop bow that you created in #2 and glue inside.
- Glue each ribbon inside of the next size larger (see picture below). This creates the turkey’s body.
- Cut another 3″ ribbon and glue as in #2 to make the turkey’s head. Glue to the body.
- Now time for the feathers: Cut 3 orange, 2 yellow, and 2 brown into 5.5″ strips. Loop around and cross at the very ends. Glue the ends together on the side that you want showing (they look like the feathers in the first picture).
- Glue the feathers like this and in this order: orange in the middle of the body behind the head/body, then two brown to each side, 2 yellows beside/below the brown, then 2 orange very last.
- Use a small triangle of orange ribbon as the beak and glue to the head. Then attach two wiggly eyes above it.
- You can stop there or create a “girly” turkey and make a bow for the turkey bow. Cut a strip of yellow ribbon and make it into an X. Wrap the wire in the middle to create a “bow”. Glue to the side of the turkey’s head.
- Glue to headband or hair clip. DONE! It is easier to create than it is to type out the directions. :)
Thank you to Mommy’s Little Sunshine for the great tutorial!
DIY Thanksgiving Handprint “Glitter Globe” Turkey
Here is a cute and creative twist on the classic children’s hand print turkey craft using construction paper and baby food jars to make a “glitter globe”. It can be used as place cards or as decoration year after year.
What You’ll Need:
- Tacky Adhesive Glue
- Glitter (brown or gold, or go crazy!)
- Scissors
- Yellow felt (or construction paper is fine)
- Googly eyes
- Pencil
- Scrapbook or construction paper in fall colors
- Cleaned, label-free baby food jar(s) with lids on
Directions:
- Trace child’s hand on construction paper and cut hand out to be your template. Do it for each child if more than one.
- Trace and cut out multiple hand prints with template, alternating paper colors. You’ll need 3 to 5 hand prints per craft.
- Add a dot of glue at the bottom of one hand print. Place another hand print on top of the first, but tilted slightly to the right. Repeat until you created a fan of “feathers”.
- Put baby food jar on the table lid down and place glue to the back of the jar. Press feather of hand prints on and hold to secure.
- Glue googly eyes to the front of the jar.
- Cut out small triangle of yellow felt or construction paper for the beak and glue under eyes.
- When all is nearly dry, fill jar with water, then pour in glitter. Put glue around the rim of jar and put the lid back on tightly.
Big thanks to LovetoCreate for the idea!
